It was the perfect ending to the fall golf season for freshman star Krissy Unger. Earlier this week, the women’s golf team hosted the Quinnipiac Classic at TPC River Highlands (Monday) and The Farms (Tuesday). Unger finished first overall on the individual leader board, becoming the first medalist in the program’s history.
“Today was mostly about the team,” Unger said, “I knew we had contention and I knew we were very close. The goal was to go out there and shoot a number, play well, and do it for the team.”
The Bobcats came through with a complete team effort, erasing Merrimack’s seven-shot lead after day one to win the Quinnipiac Classic.
“This was our first victory in the history of our women’s Golf program,” Quinnipiac coach John O’Connor said, “I am very proud of the girls.”
The Bobcats won the tournament by shooting 333 on Monday and 328 on Tuesday, combining for a sore of 661, five shots ahead of second place Merrimack. Unger led the way for Quinnipiac shooting a 79 on Monday, and following that round up with a 77 on Tuesday. Unger’s 77 was one stroke shy of tying the single round for 18 holes, set by teammate Jenn Whaley earlier this season at the Dartmouth Invitational.
Unger’s two-day total of 156 put her seven strokes ahead of second place finisher, Katherine Rockwell (163, Fairfield University). Unger finished the fall season with an 18-hole average of 79.67 and will hope to continue her strong play when the spring season commences.
