The Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team tied the Buckeyes of Ohio State 1-1 in the first of a two-game series. The student section brought its voices as well as its yellow attire.
The first period got under way with few shots by both teams.. Each team played carefully, not to make a mistake rather than being aggressive. In the slow first period Quinnipiac outshot Ohio State 8-6.
The captain however for the Bobcats, Zack Currie had his legs rolling all night long. Mid-way through the first period he bodied up an attacker one on one textbook style and then began to rush up the ice. In the offensive zone, he was hit with a pass and took a quick backhander, which grazed the netting going wide. It seemed his performance rubbed off to some of his teammates in the second period.
Heading into the second period the mood of the game changed. Quinnipiac opened up on the power play with various one-timers that were pushed aside, finishing 0-3 on the power play. Finally the Bobcats were able to pull through on a low blocker side snipe by Matthew Peca. Kellen Jones took the goalie’s eyes away, which allowed Peca to shoot, score, and celebrate.
Going into the third period the mindset for the bobcats was to get pucks deep and contain the Buckeyes in their own zone. For a while it was working but as so many good teams do, they adjusted
“They’re a very good hockey team, ton of talent, and there are about seven or eight players on that Ohio State roster who have a chance to play in the NHL someday,” head coach Rand Pecknold said.
The Buckeyes scored with nine minutes left on the clock to tie it. The goal was scored by sophomore Matt Johnson and assisted by freshman Tyler Lundey.
Despite overtime action neither side came away with an advantage.
These two teams will face off again Saturday at the High Point Solutions Arena at 4 p.m.
