The Quinnipiac Bobcats broke their 15-game losing streak after winning their game against the St. Francis (N.Y.) Terriers 3-0 on Sunday. It was their second win and first sweep of the season.
The Bobcats’ record improves to 2-21 (1-13 NEC) and the Terriers move to 2-27 (2-12 NEC). Though the win will not have an impact on the Bobcats’ participation in the Northeast Conference Tournament, the confidence gained by the win is invaluable.
The Bobcats now have a 14-6 all-time record against the Terriers and are now 6-5 for their past 11 matchups.
“St. Francis is a good team,” head coach Kris Czaplinski said. “We just managed to do the right things today and played very well, blocking and passing.”
Attacking the first set, the Bobcats immediately gained the lead. They maintained this lead throughout the remainder of the set and won it 25-20. This was the second first-set victory of the season for the Bobcats.
The Terriers challenged the Bobcats by taking a marginal lead for the majority of the second set. Quinnipiac came back fighting, however, after strong back-and-forth play. With Bonnie Conklin’s (Plano, Texas) three kills and Tierra Allen’s (Sumter, S.C.) four kills, three digs, and a service ace, the Bobcats finished out the second set 25-19.
“I think Tierra [Allen] set the block for me really well,” Conklin said. “I just went out there, trusted her and went through with it.”
As the crowd’s cheers intensified, Quinnipiac repeated its
second set performance in the third and won in extra points 30-28. This was their first home win and also their first NEC win.
“Blocking was the biggest key today. This whole week we focused on setting up the block,” Czaplinski said. “If you can block the right way you can pass and play defense. Volleyball is easy and it’s fun.”
The Bobcats will continue having fun and look to earn another win as they head to Fairfield, Conn. to face off against Sacred Heart on Saturday at 5 p.m.
