The Quinnipiac Bobcats extended their unbeaten streak to 15 straight with a 1-1 tie against the Rensselaer Engineers at the High Point Solutions Arena.
But the first period was all but entertaining as the two teams skated a pretty even, back and forth effort with very little action and physical play.
In the second period of play, Zach Davies (Smithers, British Columbia) took a tripping penalty less than two minutes after the puck dropped. With 39 seconds remaining in the man-advantage, Rensselaer’s CJ Lee was able to fire one past Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake, Minn.) after a shot from the slot was stopped and the rebound came out to Lee in front of the net.
About six minutes later, the Bobcats handled the puck down in the RPI zone. To the left of goalie Bryce Merriam, Zach Tolkinen (Lino Lakes, Minn.) passed the puck over to Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) in the circle who was quickly swarmed by a couple of RPI defenders. He slid the puck quickly over to Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.) in the slot who one-timed it over the shoulder of Merriam into the net to tie the game.
“[Langlois] could have had six or seven goals tonight,” head coach Rand Pecknold said of the senior’s play.
The physical play picked up heavily in the third period. RPI’s Johnny Rogic had a breakaway with a head full of steam but was turned away by Hartzell. Later in the period, another RPI player had a breakaway that was once again saved by Hartzell, and that turned into a two on one odd-man-rush opportunity for Quinnipiac involving Connor Jones but the puck was shot wide.
In the extra, five minute period, the two teams skated back and forth until about the final minute, when shots from both sides were exchanged, both goalies turning them aside.
The Bobcats take on the Union Dutchmen on Jan. 12 at 7:00 p.m. at the High Point Solutions Arena.
