On a cold and rainy afternoon in Hamden, the University of Hartford Hawks defeated the Quinnipiac Bobcats 8-5, with a lot of balls leaving the yard.
Five home runs were exchanged between the two teams. Quinnipiac hit three of those, including two from Scott Donaghue, the second being a back-to-back with captain Chris Migani.
That wouldn’t be enough for the Bobcats as the Hawks’ Ryan Lukach and James Alfonso homered for their team, and Bobcat starting pitcher Kevin Sustad gave up five of the eight Hartford runs.
In the loss, Vincent Guglietti, Mike Palladino, and Steffen Herter each had two hits.
“We’ve got to score runs. You can’t win games without the runs,” manager Dan Gooley said after the game. “We’ve got to swing the bat and score runs.”
Despite the nine-game losing streak, Migani knows what needs to be done.
“We just have to keep playing, it’s the only thing we can do. We got a lot of momentum today after the back-to-back home runs, thinking we’re going to come back, but we’ve got to hold up things on the defensive side,” Migani said. “Our record doesn’t show how good we really are.”
The loss dropped the Bobcats to 10-21, while bringing the Hawks up to 11-21. Up next for the Bobcats is a three-game non-conference series at Notre Dame April 19, 20, and 21.
