The Bobcats’ bats were silenced in the final five innings of the game, as Wagner’s Ryan Casey outdueled Derek Lamacchia (Whitestone, N.Y.) for the 3-2 win.
Quinnipiac dropped to 10-26 and 5-12 in the NEC. Wagner improved to 16-23, and pushed its NEC record over .500 to 9-8.
“I thought Lamacchia pitched well,” head coach Dan “Skip” Gooley said. “He probably made a couple of pitches he didn’t want to make. He was trying to pitch down and in or down and away. He came middle-middle on a couple of them.”
Casey didn’t allow an extra base hit, as he went the distance for his fourth win of the season.
The Bobcats got on the board in the first inning when Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) drove in freshman Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) on a fielder’s choice.
Quinnipiac extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning on a Brain Ruditys (Boothwyn, Penn.) that plated Vince Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.).
Lamacchia cruised through the first five innings, only allowing four hits, and striking out four as well. Wagner took the lead in the sixth inning, as Flynn tied the game at two on a one out single, driving in Gray and Walsh. Flynn would come around to score three batters later, as Alfano drove in the game-winning run.
“Guglietti hit the ball hard,” Gooley said. “But he hit the ball right at the kid, and they made a great play. I mean that’s baseball.”
The Bobcats loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but Guglietti grounded into an inning ending double play to crush Quinnipiac’s rally. The Bobcats managed a hit in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t muster anything else.
Lamacchia went the distance in the loss, dropping his record to 3-6 on the season. He gave up 11 hits and struck out six in the loss.
The Bobcats and Seahawks will be back at it tomorrow for a double header. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. with game two starting 30 minutes after.
