Through rain in the opening innings, the softball team fought but ultimately fell short against Fairfield. The Bobcats snapped their seven-game winning-streak with the 5-2 loss.

“We talked before the game about coming out with the same sense of urgency that we had throughout our seven-game winning-streak, and we didn’t do it,” head coach Germaine Fairchild said.  “Defensively, we let down, and if you’re going to make mistakes out there, you have go to out-hit your mistakes and we didn’t do that.”

Fairfield jumped on the board first, scoring on a Quinnipiac error, one of three on the day.

The Bobcats would bounce back in the bottom half of the first inning with two runs. Courtney Solt (Boyertown, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, and advanced to second on a Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) ground out. She would advance to third and eventually home on a pass ball to Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) and a wild pitch to Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.).

Alba come scored later in the inning on another pass ball to Bridgette Figmic (Stanford, Conn.).

Despite giving up two runs, Fairfield pitcher Rae Ball gave up no hits in the inning.

Fairfield tied up the game in the third inning when Lauren Liseth tripled to right center, bringing home Kimi Kurata.

The Stags tacked on one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to bring the final score to 5-2.

The Bobcats had a glimpse at a rally, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Figmic popped out to the short stop to end the game.

Even though the team had two doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday, Fairchild is not chalking it up as a reason for the loss.

“It’s really not an excuse at this level. It all comes in the wash,” Fairchild said. “We’re not the only ones having to travel and play a road doubleheader. Everyone has to do that at some point or another.”

The Bobcats next head to Harvard for another doubleheader on Thursday, April 18.
