The Bobcats and the Seahawks exchanged runs during their final game of the series, but fielding errors ultimately cost the Bobcats the back-and-forth game as they lost 10-9, bringing their losing streak to 17.
Quinnipiac struggled in the field, causing four unearned runs to score. Vince Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) dropped a popup with two outs in the third inning, allowing Jayson Keel and Shaun Flynn to score.
Guglietti gave the Seahawks problems all day, going four for five, with two doubles and two singles. He drove in three runs and scored another.
“He attacks left center field,” head coach Dan Gooley said. “When he’s in that hitting groove he just hits a lot of line drives or a lot of long fly balls for doubles.”
As the Bobcats kept tying the game up and taking small leads, Guglietti’s hits could not make up for the early fielding mistakes.
In the fifth inning, Justin Thomas (Enfield, Conn.) allowed two more unearned runs to score after he threw an Alfano grounder wide of first, allowing Wager to score their seventh and eighth runs.
Tied up 8-8 in the top of the eighth inning, Alfano stole third base on a dropped ball by Tom Donovan (Marshfield, Mass.). He took advantage of this scoring position after a sacrifice fly by Chris Smith.
Quinnipiac responded when Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) grounded into a fielder’s choice in the bottom half of the inning.
“We never quit, we stayed right after it, we battled back,” Gooley said. “We almost went ahead, 9-9 in the ninth … we wanted to go for the force play and the little left hander hit a line drive into center field for a base hit.”
But with the game tied up 9-9 in the top of the ninth inning, Wagner’s Ben Ruta singled out to center field. Steffen Herter (Amherst, Mass.) overran the ball, costing the Bobcats a run as the Seahawks took the lead 10-9.
“It’s part of the game,” Gooley said. “Sometimes you win it and sometimes you don’t.”
