The 110 minute marathon for the women’s soccer team ended in a 0-0 tie against the Holy Cross Crusaders. This non-conference matchup left both teams with a 0-3-1 record.
The first half was a volley for possession that favored the visiting Crusaders, giving them more shots on goal against sophomore goalkeeper Natalia Grodzki (Bartlett, Ill.).
Holy Cross was able to keep the ball in Quinnipiac’s defensive zone. The Bobcats were unable to get a shot on goal until the final ten minutes.
At the start of the second half, the momentum seemed to shift back towards the Bobcats. The team was able to get off a flurry of shots in the twelfth minute, but were unable to capitalize on the efforts.
Head coach Dave Clarke attributed the shift in momentum to the weather.
“We were defending the strong wind,” he said. “We pretty much dominated the second half because of the wind.”
In both the first and second overtime, freshman Jessica Fontaine (Enfield, Conn.) generated strong chances and played hard on the ball. On the opposite side of the pitch was continued, strong defensive play by Taylor Healey (Milford, Conn.).
Clarke was pleased with the overall effort of the team this afternoon and so far this season.
“We’ve had three tough games in terms of the level of opposition,” he said. “Holy Cross is still a step above the teams we’re playing in the MAAC. Now we’re coming closer to what we’re going to face in the next couple of months.”
The Bobcats will have the week to rest before they visit the University of Vermont on Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m.
