A goal in the 84th minute by Larry Ndjock carried the Loyola Greyhounds to a 1-0 victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Wednesday afternoon. Loyola improves to 3-0-1 on the year, while Quinnipiac drops to 0-2-2.
Ndjock’s winning goal came after he collected a pass, got past the defense on the far side, and beat Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) on the near post.
“Soccer isn’t a fair game and we definitely didn’t get what we deserved out of the game,” head coach Eric Da Costa said. “It comes down to one mistake or not capitalizing on one play.”
Angoitia made seven saves over the course of the game to keep the Bobcats in the game, but the Quinnipiac offense couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities.
Quinnipiac outshot Loyola 17-11, but only put three shots on target compared to the Greyhounds’ eight shots on goal. Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamaica) led Quinnipiac with seven shots, but failed to put one on target.
Despite the team’s record so far this season, Da Costa is encouraged by the team’s effort.
“In terms of our performance I think we’re right where we should be,” Da Costa said. “Obviously we want tangible results to go along with that and we didn’t get that today, but we’ll keep plugging away and believing in what we’re doing.”
The Bobcats continue to get their first win on Saturday when they host Holy Cross. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
