The summer has flown by and it’s time for hockey to begin again. The Quinnipiac Bobcats take on St. Mary’s University in an exhibition matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday to kick off the 2013-14 season.
Keys for St. Mary’s
This will be the Huskie’s fifth and next-to-last exhibition game, going 0-3-1 in their first four. It’s their second against an ECAC team, as they lost at RPI Saturday night by a score of 5-1. This is good experience to prepare them for their season when it officially starts later this month, but they are going up against a very good Bobcat squad filled with skill and heavy hitters.
They need to find a way to tire out the Bobcats and play conservatively. They should play a conservative trap and just dump the puck in. Stop the Bobcats in the neutral zone and keep making them chase the puck back in their own zone.
Even though it is only preseason, the Huskies want to salvage at least one win going into the regular season, and it starts with slowing down the Bobcats and putting defense as the top priority.
Keys for Quinnipiac
This is the Bobcats first and only exhibition game before kicking off the regular season in Alaska to play in the Kendall Hockey classic. Though it is only an exhibition game, it’s not a game to sit back on. This is preparation for next week in Alaska and they need to put the game away.
The Bobcats need to score first. They are almost unstoppable when they score first. This is a game they need to win and not take as a throw away game. This is their only prep for the regular season and it won’t be an easy start the season with games in Alaska and against Umass-Lowell. It’s important for them to start off right with a win to boost their confidence and make a strong case for themselves early on.
