The Quinnipiac Bobcats completed the weekend sweep of the Holy Cross Crusaders with a 4-1 win in the High Point Solutions Arena at TD Banks Sports Center.
Holy Cross struck first again Saturday night. Mike Barrett slid the puck under sophomore goaltender Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia), scoring on a scramble in front of the Quinnipiac net.
The Bobcats outshot the Crusaders 20-6 that period but could not score on goaltender Matt Ginn.
The Bobcats tied the game just five minutes and 18 seconds into the second frame. Freshman Sam Anas (Potomac, Md.) took a pass from senior Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) and wristed a shot that skimmed the crossbar into the net before Ginn could lift his glove.
Anas scored his second goal of the game on the power play, and it, at the time, gave the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage.
In the third, the Bobcats scored another power-play goal, this time from senior Bryce Van Brabant (Morinville, Alberta) with an assist from Kellen Jones, his second of the game.
Travis St. Denis added an empty net goal in the final minute – his third goal of the weekend – to secure the Bobcats win.
With a two-goal night for Anas, his mentality is simple – shoot the puck.
“Sometimes you come in as a freshman, and you try to over-think some things,” Anas said. “Just shoot the puck, and it’s got to go in a couple of times.”
Head coach Rand Pecknold noted the difference he made this weekend.
“He had a great weekend,” Pecknold said. “He’s been rounding out his game and he played great defensively this weekend.”
The Bobcats open up conference play next weekend. Quinnipiac hits the to take on ECAC opponents Colgate and Cornell.
