For the first time since February 22, 2013 the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team was able to put more than 50 shots on goal after posting 59 shots on Penn State. This barrage of shots from the Bobcats helped to keep their undefeated record so far this season, as they beat Penn State 4-0 on Saturday.
The game-winning goal came five minutes into the second period when sophomore Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ontario) put Quinnipiac up 1-0. The scrum in front of the Penn State net allowed her to capitalize on the rebound from the shot from Amanda Colin (Burnsville, Minn.).
The Bobcats came alive in the third period, posting three goals. Junior Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Mich.) scored the third goal of the game, her third goal in this two-game series. Also scoring for Quinnipiac was freshman Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) and sophomore Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario).
Head coach Rick Seeley had words of praise for Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minn.), the junior goaltender who has begun in a starting role for the first time in her career.
“She looked solid,” Seeley said. “I mean, she wasn’t really that tested. Today I thought our back check was great, defensive coverage was really good. She’s been a rock so far.”
He also praised the work the team put in throughout the game.
“I liked our energy today,” he said. “I thought we built off of yesterday’s game. It was a good game, but I thought with each period we got stronger and stronger throughout the game.”
Laden was also proud of the work the defense did in front of her, helping to secure her third career shutout.
“I am so proud of my freshman defense,” Laden said. “Tonight watching everyone block shots, it felt like I had five other goalies with me.”
The Bobcats will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to Maine for a weekend series on Oct. 18-19 against the Black Bears.
