Amanda Danziger’s (Smithtown, N.Y.) overtime goal lifted the Quinnipiac Bobcats to a 1-0 win over the Bryant Bulldogs on Senior Day. Quinnipiac improves to 11-6 on season and pushes its MAAC record to 4-1. Bryant falls to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the MAAC.
“It is a complete rush of emotion right now and I’m still trying to catch my breath,” Danziger said.
The game-winning goal came in overtime on a penalty corner. Haley Swartz (Downington, Pa.) inserted the ball to Danziger, who fired a shot toward Bryant’s goalie Megan Hancock when the defense didn’t pressure the ball.
“I saw they didn’t send out a flyer right away so I had a little more time on my shot, which was nice,” Danziger said. “I saw the side wide open and just let it rip.”
The Bobcats took 14 shots during the 70 minutes of regulation, but could not beat Hancock. Their best chance came during the second half when the Bobcats were awarded a penalty stoke after Kelsey Hiltebeitel used her body to block a Danielle Allan (Riverdale, N.J.) shot on goal. Swartz’s penalty stroke sailed just wide of the cage.
Both teams struggled establishing offensive pressure. The defense for the Bobcats and the Bulldogs controlled the momentum of the game. The Bobcats’ defense stood a little stronger, as they limited the number of shots on goal to nine, helping Megan Conaboy (Clarks Summitt, Pa.) pick up her fourth shutout on the year.
With the win, Quinnipiac clinches the two seed in the MAAC Championship next week at Rider. The team travels to Siena on Sunday for its regular season finale against the Saints.
