The women’s basketball team won against the North Carolina A&T Aggies, 77-63, in its Preseason WNIT opener.
The game started on a high note for the Bobcats as junior Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) drilled a 3-pointer from the corner. This became a theme for the Bobcats in the half as they shot 10-15 from 3-point range, with Martin shooting 4-4 from downtown and 5-5 overall.
For the Aggies, scoring was a struggle as they shot 9-24 (37.5%) overall, as well as 2-9 (22.2%) from 3-point range.
Head coach Tricia Fabbri picked up right where she left off last year with her “gold rush” system of substituting, which entails subbing all five players on the court at the same time.
The system continued to work this year as Quinnipiac led North Carolina A&T 46-23 at halftime. Jasmine Martin led all scorers with 16 points.
The second half started on a different hand as the Aggies mounted a 10-2 run. However, the Bobcats took their time in controlling the ball after that run and managed to keep a large margin between themselves and the Aggies throughout the rest of the game.
Martin continued to score, not missing a single shot from the field and only missing a single free throw. She finished with 22 points total.
“I’m going to do what I can to score the ball when I can, but I’m not looking to score all the points,” Martin said.
Coach Fabbri also had high regards for Martin this game, for leading the way by hitting 3-pointers and helping the team settle into a very balanced game.
The Bobcats go on in the tournament to play the winner of the game between Louisville and Loyola (Chicago), which takes place Saturday night.
