Coming into this afternoon’s game, very few expected a low-scoring game from the No. 9/10 Quinnipiac Bobcats and No. 3 Cornell Big Red. Cornell had come off a 6-5 win at Princeton University while Quinnipiac downed Colgate 6-0 at home.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie after Cornell capitalized on a penalty shot midway through the third period after sophomore defenseman Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) tripped Emily Fulton as she had a shorthanded breakaway for Cornell.
Though the Bobcats led for almost a full period of the game, head coach Rick Seeley was not disappointed in the result.
“You have to play almost perfectly to win a game like that and I thought we were pretty close,” Seeley said. “A critical mistake like that and it’s a tie game but it’s still a 1-1 tie against the third ranked team in the country and the first place team in our conference.”
The goal that broke the scoring open was from junior Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Mich.) who scored her first career shorthanded goal 15 minutes into the second period. Darkangelo received a pass from senior captain Amanda Colin (Burnsville, Minn.) on the near side face off circle, allowing her enough space to get a wrist shot over the glove of Cornell goaltender Lauren Slebodnick.
“I thought it was a great college hockey game, I thought we were poised and worked hard all game,” Seeley praised.
The women hope to continue their success in ECAC play next weekend as they play Brown Nov. 8 and Yale Nov. 9.
