The Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team (13-2-5, 4-2-4 ECAC) moves into third place in the ECAC with a 4-2 win over the Union Dutchwomen (5-10-0, 2-5-0 ECAC) on Friday night.
The first period was all Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Mich.) for the Bobcats. Five minutes into the game she broke the scoring open with a feed from senior center Kelly Babstock (Missassauga, Ontario) in the corner, tucking it between the goaltender’s pad and the post.
Darkangelo’s second of the night came just five minutes later. The shot from the slot bounced up, hit the top of the net, fell down in front and was stuffed in for her 13th goal of the season.
Head coach Rick Seeley acknowledges the impact the Syracuse University transfer has had on this team.
“I think she has 13 goals and most of them are pretty big,” he said. “She’s the X-factor … [Darkangelo has] been invaluable with her production.”
Quinnipiac was able again to score early in the second, with junior Anna Borgfeldt (Kristianstad, Sweden) scoring her second of the season. Her goal came off of a shot behind the goal line that deflected off of Union goaltender Shenae Lundberg.
On the other end of the ice, Union scored its first of the game 11 minutes in, with Kathryn Tomaselli getting a shot to squeak through the pads of Chelsea Laden, who would face 17 shots on the night.
Union scored once again off of a five-on-three in the third period from a deflection in front from Kathryn Tomaselli.
The goal didn’t concern Coach Seeley too much.
“Well it’s a five-on-three, they’re always tough to defend,” he said. “We missed a blocked shot and someone was open on the short side.”
The last goal would come off the stick of Kelly Babstock, who was able to bring in the puck to the offensive zone and take a crisp shot that sailed past the goaltender. She leads the nation in scoring with 12 goals and 20 assists.
The women continue conference play on Saturday, Dec. 4 as they take on the Rensselaer Engineers at the High Point Solutions Arena.
