The Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team (17-4-7, 8-3-5 ECAC) drew against ECAC leader Harvard (17-2-3, 13-2-2 ECAC) 2-2 Saturday at High Point Solutions Arena.
The draw was broken five minutes into by junior left wing Shiann Darkangelo who stuffed in a rebound from a Kelly Babstock shot.
Quinnipiac head coach Rick Seeley praised Darkangelo’s work this weekend.
“This weekend I thought she was by far and away our best player,” he said. “I mean her intensity’s been great, she’s been making smart plays and she’s producing offensively. You can’t ask for much more.”
The lead for the Bobcats did not last long. Crimson forward Miye D’Oench was left open on the near side and scored at 11:40 in the second. The home team regained the lead before the period would end. Freshman Emma Woods took a centering feed from line mate Shiann Darkangelo and scored on a one-timer from the slot.
The lead would last until midway through the third period, one Seeley said could have gone better.
“I thought we panicked a bit in the third period,” he said. “I thought we gave them opportunities we shouldn’t have. We ended up controlling the game pretty well, but we just have to learn from that.”
With six minutes left, Crimson center Mary Parker was able to poke the puck in through the pads of goaltender Chelsea Laden. It was argued by both Seeley and captain Amanda Colin that Laden had the puck covered and the play was dead. The call was not reversed.
In the last three minutes of the game, the Bobcats power play was given the opportunity to test the best penalty killers in the nation for the Crimson. For two minutes Quinnipiac had a five-on-three. The Bobcats were unable to convert.
Seeley was disappointed in the play.
“We changed our power play, so we haven’t worked a lot on 5-on-3,” he said. “I thought we stood around when there were loose pucks in the slot, kind of standing on the flanks. We had a couple of opportunities, but we have to be better on those pucks.”
The Bobcats continue ECAC play as they visit Clarkson Feb. 7 and St. Lawrence on Feb. 8.
