Men’s ice hockey junior Matthew Peca passed several milestones over the weekend to be named this week’s QBSN Athlete of the Week. Peca had an incredible seven-point weekend, contributing in both the win over St. Lawrence and the tie to Clarkson.
In the 8-0 victory over St. Lawrence, Peca scored twice and assisted on four other goals for a total of six points. On his second goal of the night Peca reached 100 career points. He is the first junior to reach the 100-point club since Brandon Wong did in the 2008-09 season. Peca is the 37th Quinnipiac player all-time to reach 100 career points.
His six points against St. Lawrence are the most for a player in a NCAA game this season and also tie the Quinnipiac program record for most points in a single game. Back in 1999 Jed Holtzman set the original record also tallying six points in a win against Fairfield in the MAAC Quarterfinals.
To top off the weekend, Peca had an assist in the 1-1 tie against Clarkson. The assist completed his seven-point weekend total and left him with 103 career points.
Peca helped the Bobcats to a third place finish in the ECAC. They earned a first round bye and will wait to see which team they face in the ECAC Quarterfinals.
Quinnipiac is currently the only team in NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey that has four players with 100 career points. Connor Jones, Kellen Jones and Jordan Samuels-Thomas are the other players to achieve that feat.
