In just his second career start for Quinnipiac, freshman starting pitcher Brandon Shileikis tossed a nine-inning, one-hit shutout with three walks and one strikeout to earn his first win as a Bobcat and QBSN athlete of the week honors. His dominant day powered Quinnipiac to a 6-0 victory over the Iona Gaels on Sunday, the sixth in a row for the Bobcats.
The North Dighton, Mass. native also earned the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of The Week award for the performance. The young right-hander threw 92 pitches for 53 strikes, while retiring the final ten batters of the game, allowing just one fourth-inning single by Iona outfielder Jimmy Guiliano. Shileikis then walked a batter, but forced an inning ending double play to avoid any damage.
The strong performance helped the Bobcats seal a three-game weekend sweep over the Gaels, and give them their 10th win in their last 13 games. The Bobcats hit the diamond again Saturday April 19 for a double header against Saint Peter’s beginning at 12 p.m. in Hamden, Conn.
