The Quinnipiac Bobcats field hockey team dropped its first game of the season at home to the No. 13 Boston College Eagles by a final score of 3-0. The Bobcats are now 0-1 while the Eagles improve to 1-0.
On Friday afternoon the Bobcats hosted the Eagles in the first-annual Longstreth/Bobcat Classic. The Eagles came out firing on all cylinders, getting four shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the game. Yet thanks to the Bobcats’ strong defensive play, making key blocks, and huge saves from senior Megan Conaboy, the Bobcats were able to keep the game tied at zero apiece.
The Eagles sustained most of the pressure in the first half while adding another three shots on goal, but couldn’t find an answer to Conaboy and the Bobcats’ defense.
Conaboy had a tremendous first half with seven big-time saves.
“I think that she’s probably the most trusted player on the team,” head coach Becca Main said. “She’ll step up once or twice and then make a crazy save.”
In the second half of the game, the Eagles came out strong yet again, sustaining most of the pressure due to some turnovers from the Bobcats, who struggled to break out of their end. The deadlock was broken at the 23rd minute of the second half by a shot from Eagles forward Brittany Sheenan. The Bobcats’ best chance of the game came off a well-executed corner, but the shot from junior forward Meghan McCullough went just wide of the goal. The Eagles ended the game with a powerful shot down the middle from forward Abby Bascetta.
Looking forward, the Quinnipiac Bobcats will try to pull an even record in the Longstreth/Bobcat Classic when they face the Lafayette Leopards on Sunday at 3 p.m.
“I think we have enough freshmen that are elite level enough players that we really need to get them more acquainted with how we want to make adjustments and how we want to play the systems,” Main said.
