After being held scoreless in their first two games of the season, the Quinnipiac Bobcats (0-3-0) looked to bounce back against the Boston College Eagles (2-0-1) in their home opener. Behind star goalkeeper senior Borja Angoita the Bobcats faced a top notch non-conference opponent in the Eagles of Boston College, however their homecoming was spoiled by a 2-0 loss.
In the first half, the Bobcats had their backs against the wall as the Eagles out possessed them, however, a tremendous defensive effort limited the shots that found their way to the net. The Bobcats had several scoring chances on their corner kicks, but none of them amounted to any goals. With only 3:30 remaining in the half, a low drive by the Boston College’s Derrick Boateng found the back of the net passed the diving Angoita. As halftime sounded, the Eagles led the Bobcats 1-0.
In the second half, possession was much more balanced. Both teams maintained equal possession while the Bobcat’s defense continued to hold strong. The Bobcats had several scoring opportunities in the half including a free kick from just outside the 18 yard box, however freshman Shaquille Huggins’s shot flew just wide of the net.
Throughout the second half, the Bobcats were able to cut down on their defensive t turnovers, limiting the Eagles scoring opportunities even more. They had several counter attack chances; however poor passing and timely defense by the Eagles broke up most of the scoring chances for the Bobcats.
“We have created some good looks at goal. They had a couple and they put them away. We had several and we didn’t. That’s soccer,” said Bobcats head coach Eric Da Costa regarding the Bobcats failure to score in their first three regular season games.
Late in the second half, an incredible chip by Isaac Normesinu sealed an Eagles 2-0 win and the Bobcats were shut out for the third consecutive game.
“Our entire schedule is difficult. We do that for a reason. It’s all in preparation for conference play,” said Da Costa.
The Bobcats get back at it Sunday in another non-conference bout against Providence College.
