Arizona State University officials announced they are adding a Division I men’s ice hockey program during a press conference Tuesday. The ice hockey program will be integrated during the next three seasons.
The Sun Devils, whose club hockey team is the defending national champion in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), have been rumored throughout the season to be in serious consideration of adding ice hockey as a varsity sport.
The Sun Devils will continue to play in the ACHA until they play a mix of ACHA and Division I teams in 2015-16 and become a full-time Division I team in 2016 before picking a conference in 2017. The school has received $32 million in donations to fund the transition. While no rink has been solidified as the new home for Sun Devil hockey, Arizona State administration promised facilities will be suitable for a Division I team, and said they hope to have an on-campus arena in the future.
The move opens the door to the possibility of even more expansion in college hockey. The Pac 12’s TV network has many college hockey fans believing the conference could have more schools join Division I hockey, similar to the Big Ten.
