The No. 4 Quinnipiac Bobcats (10-0-2, 5-0-1 ECAC) tied the St. Lawrence Saints (7-5-2, 4-2-1 ECAC) 2-2 on Saturday in Hamden. The Saints controlled play to start the game, but the Bobcats took over after getting some offensive zone opportunities, including a couple of one-timers off the stick of senior Erica Uden Johansson that just missed the net.
Sophomore Emma Woods scored her second goal of the weekend and third in as many games at the 9:18 mark of the first period to put Quinnipiac up 1-0. She took the puck just inside the Saints’ zone on a pass from junior Nicole Brown and shot a sharp wrist shot past the glove of Carmen MacDonald.
38 seconds into the second period, Brooke Webster scored her ninth goal of the season off of a feed from Jackie Wand to tie the game at one. The Saints continued their dominance throughout the period, sustaining offensive zone pressure on the Bobcats. After a lapse and a crossbar shot from junior Lindsey West, St. Lawrence charged right back down to Quinnipiac’s zone, where Jenna Marks scored her eighth goal of the season, sending home a rebound off of a wrap-around attempt by Kailee Heidersbach. For the first time this season, the Bobcats were in a deficit.
In the third, the Saints continued to dominate on their side of the puck to start the period, but the Bobcats, who were without junior Nicole Kosta for the rest of the game, were able to tie the game on a turnover with 9:19 remaining. Junior Nicole Connery deflected a pass from senior Morgan Fritz-Ward that just trickled past MacDonald for her seventh goal of the season. The Bobcats had 11 shots on goal in the third period and held the Saints to three. The teams battled in a five-minute sudden death overtime but were not able to get one past either of the goaltenders. Senior Chelsea Laden made 17 saves for Quinnipiac, while MacDonald stopped 24 for St. Lawrence.
“I thought the first two periods were pretty stale,” Quinnipiac head coach Rick Seeley said. “I thought our team showed a ton of heart in the third period and took it to them and for us that’s a big point.”
Quinnipiac remains undefeated with its record now at 10-0-2 (5-0-1 ECAC). The Bobcats travel to Princeton on Tuesday to take on the Tigers, and then go to Storrs on Friday for the first game of the Nutmeg Classic against Yale. St. Lawrence is now 7-5-2 (4-2-1 ECAC) and does not return to action until Dec. 5 when they will take on Colgate.
