Junior goaltender Michael Garteig’s 20-save night helped the Quinnipiac Bobcats (2-2-1) to a 3-2 win against the Northeastern Huskies (0-5-0) on Saturday.
The win came 10 days after the team’s 4-1 loss to the University of Connecticut, in which Garteig was pulled during the first period of play. Yet tonight, head coach Rand Pecknold praised Garteig’s play against Northeastern.
“He looked sharp,” head coach Rand Pecknold said. “… I thought Garteig was great tonight. I thought he was one of our best players, which is kind of what he did last year for us.”
After a stagnant first period in Saturday night’s game between the Quinnipiac Bobcats and Northeastern Huskies, things started opening up in the second period between the two teams.
It started when Travis St. Denis took a feed from Devon Toews and one-timed it over Huskies goalie Derick Roy’s shoulder. Less than a minute later, Toews got paid for his hard work from before and scored a dribbler from the right point, putting the Bobcats up 2-0.
After a slew of penalties from the Bobcats, putting them down two men, the Huskies got one back when Garret Cockerill put one past Garteig, cutting the Bobcats’ lead in half.
Before the period was over, Andrew Taverner scored his first career goal after receiving a cross-ice pass from Derek Smith and one timing one under Roy’s pads, putting the Bobcats up 3-1.
Later in the third period, things started to heat up for the Huskies when Kevin Roy scored and cut Quinnipiac’s lead in half. Yet the Bobcats survived, maintaining the lead for the remainder of the period, and secured the win.
“I think we wanted this one pretty bad,” Garteig said. “We’re a team that shouldn’t be 1-2-1 to start the season, so to get a win tonight was big.”
The Bobcats will face the Huskies again Sunday at 4 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center.
