The Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team (8-0-1, 3-0-0 ECAC) continued their winning ways, defeating the RPI Engineers (1-9-2, 0-3-0 ECAC) 6-1 on Friday night.
Even with the lopsided score, the Bobcats game was contained within the first period. The team posted 12 shots and had one goal scored by junior Nicole Kosta, but still seemed to have trouble getting a set pace to the game.
“I guess we expected to be a little rusty,” head coach Rick Seeley said. “But it’s nice when you have the skill players who can get you through that and score some nice goals.”
Though there were still a flurry of missed passes, the Bobcats came out with force in the second with a lot of shots, and a few pucks ringing off the crossbar.
Senior Erica Uden Johanson scored midway through the second with a well placed wrist shot. Fellow senior Shiann Darkangelo would score on the power play wide open in the slot to complete the scoring for the line through two periods. The top set of Darkangelo-Kosta-Uden Johanson would end the night with a combined six points.
“In the past we haven’t won games like this,” Seeley said. “So it’s nice that we have the depth to still pull out games like this.”
With an abundance of time and clear lanes on the ice, Quinnipiac would be able to post three more goals— two coming off of junior Nicole Connery’s stick.
“That was in the third. Personally, I struggled in the first and second period and I could feel it,” Connery said. “I had my teammates to lift me up constantly, like my linemates, after every shift they pick me up.”
In the third, Chelsea Laden gave up just the third goal on the season. The Quinnipiac defense, which lead the nation in team goals against average with a 0.38 coming into the game let a puck trickle in past the reach of a sprawling Laden with four minutes left in the period.
The Bobcats will look to remain undefeated as they face off against the 1-8-2 Union Dutchwomen on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the High Point Solutions Arena at 4 p.m.
