The Quinnipiac University men’s soccer team’s first MAAC showdown did not go as planned as they fell to the St. Peter’s Peacocks 2-0.
The Bobcats fell to 0-6-2 after the loss to St. Peters (3-3-1), a loss that broke their 17-game MAAC unbeaten streak that dates back to 2013. This is the third time this season that the team has been shut out by their opponent.
It was a strong defensive effort for the Bobcats in the first half, as goalkeeper Triston Henry had two saves to help keep the game scoreless. It was in the second half that St. Peter’s forward Luke Fairlamb scored the first goal of the game with 22 minutes left.
The Peacocks extended the lead in the 15th minute, when St. Peter’s defender Louis Mobbs scored on an assist from defender Jack Fisher. The Bobcats controlled the ball movement for much of the game but couldn’t seem to get the ball in the net, and St. Peter’s goalkeeper Jamie Cleland finished with four saves.
Despite the tough start to the season, head coach Eric Da Costa is still looking at the positive.
“There are still 27 points out there for us to get, and our main goal is to win the championship,” Da Costa said. “There are positives every game, and we need to balance the positives and negatives. Soccer is not a fair sport and it can really be unpredictable.”
Da Costa knows that there are expectations for his team to be better, and knows the Bobcats have to start proving that they can win.
“As of right now, we aren’t proven winners. We need to prove we are winners in these next upcoming games,” he said.
The Bobcats will get another shot to get on the winning track when they play at Niagara next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
