A strong defensive showing for the Quinnipiac University men’s soccer team (1-8-5) lead to a 0-0 tie with MAAC rival Fairfield (4-4-5) Wednesday afternoon.
The Bobcats were unable to score a goal for the fifth time this season, and second game in a row. Still, it was a very impressive defensive effort for both sides. Goalkeeper Henry Triston finished the game with four saves, and Fairfield goalkeeper Matt Turner finished with seven.
All year it has been a struggle for the Bobcats to generate scores. They had five shots in the first half, and had many missed opportunities in the final two minutes. They finished with 14 shots overall.
The issues the team has had in scoring is something that head coach Eric De Costa has noticed all season.
“We’ve struggled all year, to finish on those chances… it’s nothing that we haven’t already seen,” De Costa said after the game. Despite this, De Costa praised the team’s defensive effort.
“We probably kept them to three, four shots on goal total… nothing overly dangerous where we walked away and said they should’ve score there,” he said.
He called today’s defensive performance a “step forward” for the team, and that he thought they have been playing really well organized on defense.
The Bobcats hope to take another step forward when they play Iona at home on Senior Day this Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Student-Athlete Athletic Advisory Committee is organizing a white out for the game, with a pre-game tailgate starting at 12:45 p.m. on the outdoor basketball courts. They will honor seniors Tobias Esche, Erik Panzer, Stevenson Hawkey, Simon Brossier, James Greco, Tanor Jobe, Nick Lasewicz and graduate student Joe Da Graca before the game begins.
