On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, Quinnipiac women’s soccer was looking to avoid a two game losing streak after their previous 2-1 loss against Seton Hall. The women did just that in a very convincing fashion as the Bobcats (3-1-1) defeated the Delaware State Hornets (1-4-0) in a wild 6-2 win.
Senior Sarah Pandolfi lead the way scoring two goals, one in each half, along with an assist. Other goal scorers included Nadya Gill, Jess Fontaine, Al Pelletier and Katrina Friedman. The freshman goalkeeper Charlotte Edmunds got the start as she allowed two goals on two shots on goal.
Delaware State’s goalkeeper Michele Lammers had a rough performance as far as goals allowed, however, she made several key saves throughout the game keeping her squad within reach. Lammers registered a total of 16 stops with one particular sliding stop in the 47 minute against Quinnipiac’s Gill. Head coach Dave Clarke emphasized how impactful Gill’s offensive threat attack was.
“Nadya’s really threatening when she draws the attention of several defenders because it then frees up passing lanes for teammates,” Clarke said.
Unfortunately, Clarke was unable to evaluate his team’s defensive communication due to the windy conditions and his distance from the sideline, but acknowledges it’s a work in progress.
“It’s difficult to gauge from the sidelines how much the players are talking or the tone that they’re using in the back line,” Clarke said. “I don’t think we were as talkative as we should’ve been in previous games, but with all of the substitutions we made today, that may have factored into the drop off.”
Clarke mentioned some key aspects of the team’s performance that must be improved on in order to keep up this success.
“Our decision making in and around the opposing penalty area needs to be better, our finishing needs to be more clinical,” Clarke said. “We need to simplify our defending and we have to stop allowing goals off of free kicks because that’s been four of our goals against.”
The women move on to begin a four game road trip starting on Wednesday Sep. 7 with an afternoon match at Bryant University where they will look to carry their 3-0 home success with them.
