The Quinnipiac Bobcats two goal third period pushed them forward for a 3-1 victory Saturday, handing the Colgate Raiders their second loss on the season.
The Bobcats (10-4-2, 5-2-1 ECAC) found themselves in another tied affair as the afternoon turned into the evening on Saturday at the High Point Solutions Arena with the game tied at one against the Raiders (12-2-1, 5-2-0 ECAC) when Kenzie Lancaster took advantage of a Colgate mistake and found herself on a breakaway during a crucial penalty kill.
Lancaster broke into the offensive zone with just goaltender Julia Vandyk to beat.
Following a move from her back-hand to her forehand, Lancaster netted her second goal of the game and gave Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead.
“Honestly, I just saw her freeze a little bit when I stopped stick handling,” Lancaster said about her game-winning goal. “So I just thought I would put it up top over her pad. I wasn’t really thinking much, just trying to react.”
The No. 8 Bobcats never looked back and went on to defeat the No. 5 Colgate Raiders 3-1 Saturday evening.
“We have talked all year about pride in process and I think today was the most complete win of the year and one we are really proud of,” head coach Cassandra Turner said.
After waiting until the second half of the game to score the night before against Cornell, Quinnipiac wasted little time getting out in front of Colgate Saturday afternoon.
Danielle Marmer skated behind the net with possession and dished the puck to Lancaster who found herself all alone in front of the net after the great pass from Marmer. Lancaster wasted little time and found the back of the net for her first goal of the night, giving the Bobcats the 1-0 lead less than seven minutes into the game.
Colgate answered in the second period on the power play to tie the game.
The Raiders’ Bailey Larson received a pass from line-mate Breanne Wilson-Bennett and skated down to the faceoff circle to the right of freshmen Abby Ives, who was starting her first game of the season. Larson rifled one to the short side of the net where it found Ives, however the puck squeaked past and the Raiders tied the game with 12:53 to play in the second period.
The Bobcats will resume action next weekend, hosting the Nutmeg Classic at the High Point Solutions Arena that starts up next Friday when they play Merrimack.
