The first time the Quinnipiac Bobcats and the Brown Bears played each other on Oct. 28, 2016 the Bobcats shut out the Bears 8-0.
Tonight, the Bobcats one-upped themselves from last game defeating the Bears 9-0.
“A lot of things that we’ve been working on, we were able to piece a number of those pieces together, and it clearly showed in terms of how we were creating chances and how we were admitting them,” head coach Cassandra Turner said.
Twelve players scored at least one point for the Bobcats, three of those players (Meghan Turner, Sarah Eve Coutu-Godbout and Randi Marcon) had multiple goal games. Meghan Turner had quite the historic night for herself, scoring her first career hat trick.
“I don’t know how to feel about [the hat trick] honestly,” Meg Turner said.
Turner started off Quinnipiac’s scoring spree, scoring just 4:03 into the first period. Kenzie Lancaster scored 10 minutes after Turner’s goal and Coutu-Godbout responded just 14 seconds after Lancaster scoring her first career goal. Randi Marcon was the final player to light the lamp for the Bobcats before the first intermission.
The second intermission wasn’t as goal-friendly; however, the Bobcats were still able to find the back of the net in the middle of the second period when the puck bounced off the pads of Brown Goaltender Julianne Landry right into the stick of Turner who capitalized on the opportunity.
Less than three minutes into the third period, Coutu-Godbout started off the scoring on a juicy rebound off the right pad of Landry and put the puck on the top shelf of the net. Coutu-Godbout then proceeded to drop to one knee, raise her stick in the air with her left hand while letting her right glove slide on the ice.
“The celebration felt like the way you should be celebrating your first career goal,” Coutu-Godbout said.
On the defensive side for the Bobcats, freshman Goaltender Abbie Ives recorded her first career shutout stopping all 12 shots she faced.
“We have three great goaltenders on our team. I think it’s good that we can interchange those goaltenders and have the confidence that we have,” Meg Turner said.
“It’s nice that [the goaltenders] challenge each other,” Coutu-Godbout said in reply to Turner’s comments on the goalie situation.
Despite being on the losing side, Brown Goaltender Julianne Landry made 42 saves during a game in which Quinnipiac was in the attacking zone for a majority of the game.
The Bobcats were content with their first win since Jan. 13. However, they’re focused on the next game ahead, which happens to be Yale, the Bobcats biggest in-state rival.
“[Yale] always give us their absolute best game. I know that’s what we’re going to get tomorrow, and I know our team knows that,” Cassandra Turner said.
Yale is currently on a five-game winning streak. In that span, the Bulldogs are averaging three goals a game and are 5-0 when scoring first.
