Some leaders are vocal and others choose to lead by example. There is also that rare breed of leaders who do both and Adily Martucci and Carly Fabbri are no exception. When their team needed a basket most on Friday, they were the ones stepping up.
Adily Martucci has been here before as a fifth-year senior and Carly Fabbri has seen it all as the coaches’ daughter.
The first half did not go as planned for the Bobcats as they trailed for nearly the entire half. Edel Thornton started the game with a three to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead but that was the only lead they would have in the first half.
With Aryn McClure, only playing six minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, the Bobcats looked to their senior captain to keep them in the game. Martucci answered her teammates call as she scored 11 of her game high 19 points in the first half.
Martucci was quick to thank her teammates and coaches for allowing her to do what she does.
“I appreciate all the confidence my coaches and teammates give me. They’re the reason why I am able to do what I’m able to do. Without their support and without their belief I couldn’t be the player I am today,” Martucci said.
Adily Martucci is known for playing with a lot of emotion out on the court and today was no different. After a three pointer half way through the second quarter, Martucci showed her emotion with a fist pump.
“You’ve gotta get hyped when you hit shots and I’m pretty sure I air-balled five of them. Just being excited about that because the hype and energy you give out is contagious and everyone feeds off of it,” Martucci said.
Carly Fabbri has struggled with her shot all season but it is not because of a lack of practice time or confidence. Fabbri knows she puts in the work that no one else can see.
“Just confidence. I get in the gym before and after practice,” Fabbri said. “I never really doubted my shot. It’s nice to see it go in, especially tournament time.”
Fabbri may not be putting up the amount of points she wants to, as she is averaging 5.1 points per game this season. She only managed to score in double-digits once in Quinnipiac’s first 28 games. However, she has scored in double-digits in her past three games and set her season high with 13 points tonight against Canisius.
“Shooters shoot, I’m confident, its March, I know my roll on the team. I know when given the ball I can knock it down,” Fabbri said.
Carly Fabbri showed her confidence when she knocked down what would prove to be the game winning three-pointer with 1:26 left in the fourth quarter. Fabbri’s three-pointer put the Bobcats up 60-57 and they would not relinquish that lead as they went on to win 63-58.
