Quinnipiac continues to climb the step stool, going from mid-major power to the Cinderella of the NCAA tournament.
The Quinnipiac Bobcats beat the Miami Hurricanes 85-78. With this win Quinnipiac advances to the Sweet 16 in Stockton, California. The Bobcats will take on the South Carolina Gamecocks who are the number one seed in the Stockton region.
Quinnipiac had to do exactly what it did against the Marquette Golden Eagles if they wanted to pull off another upset; it did exactly that.
The Bobcats, just like the previous game, were hitting their shots and defending well as a team.
Morgan Manz has had resurgence over the past two games. The senior captain scored eight points on Saturday and 22 points on Monday. She was 6-for-8 from the three point line.
The Bobcats once again battled against foul trouble for the entire game. Jen Fay and Aryn McClure both went to the bench in the second quarter when they picked up their second foul.
Foul trouble reared its ugly head again when Jen Fay picked up two quick fouls just a little over two minutes into the third quarter. Adily Martucci would soon join her teammate on the bench when she got her fourth foul in the third quarter.
With Martucci and Fay on the bench, the Miami Hurricanes mounted a serious comeback. It’s comeback was spearheaded by senior guard Jessica Thomas who scored a career high 25 points.
The Bobcats withstood the Hurricanes comeback as Morgan Manz big three after big three.
As the final minutes were ticking by, the Bobcats were holding on to a small lead as at one point Miami cut Quinnipiac’s lead down to one point.
Miami drove the lane and turned the ball over but they used their full court press to tie up Quinnipiac and get the ball back. Miami would proceed to turn the ball over again and Adily Martucci came down and nailed a big three from the corner.
Miami began to foul but Quinnipiac kept its composure at the line. Paula Strautmane got the ball and was fouled but the referees went to the line to see if it was a flagrant foul. The referees called it a flagrant foul, so Strautmane went to the line and shot two free throws which she made; with a flagrant foul the team gets two free throws and then the ball back.
The final seconds ticked away and the Bobcats stormed the court to celebrate their second consecutive win in the NCAA tournament.
The Quinnipiac Bobcats will now travel to Stockton, California to take on the top seeded South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday.
