The Quinnipiac men’s soccer team lost its second consecutive game, falling 2-0 to the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday afternoon. The loss moves the Bobcats to a 4-6-1 record on the season.
This was a very physical game that had five yellow cards for both teams and 41 total fouls for both teams combined.
The Bobcats got off to a dominant start with a great combination of passes, but were unable to capitalize off their opportunities in the final third. The Bobcats recorded 11 shots with five shots on goal. The Red Foxes recorded 12 shots with nine shots on goal.
The first real opportunity of the game came in the 26th minute. Sophomore forward Adam Rustami of the Red Foxes had a shot with the inside of his foot in the 18-yard box that was sent right into the hands of junior keeper Karl Netzell.
The biggest first-half opportunity came in the 40th minute when first-year midfielder Sivert Ryssdalsnes hit a volley that forced graduate goalkeeper Jamie Lowell to save the ball over the crossbar.
It was a great first half for Netzell who recorded six saves, keeping the score 0-0 to end the first half.
The Red Foxes opened the scoring very early in the second half when Rustami crossed the ball deep into Quinnipiac’s box, which dropped to the head of sophomore defender Nicholas Sanchez He directed the ball into the bottom left corner to give the Red Foxes the 1-0 lead.
The Red Foxes extended their lead to two in the 86th minute when junior midfielder Jonathan Salguero played a ball across the six yard box for freshman forward Chris Verheul, who slotted the ball into the back of the net.
A late chance for Quinnipiac came in the 88th minute when first-year forward Andrew Monteserin drew a penalty for the Bobcats. First-year forward William Holum’s penalty was saved by Lowell to his right.
This is the second consecutive game that the Bobcats were not able to put the ball in the back of the net.
“The build-up play was very good, the combination play was even better, and then just that decision to when to take it and when to provide just wasn’t quick enough,” head coach Eric Da Costa said. “So we just have to shoot the ball when you get in good positions and you gotta take your chances and when you do that, good things happen.”
The top scorer for the Bobcats, senior midfielder Filip Kangeman, did not start the game. He was subbed into the game in the 31st minute, but came off in the 63rd minute. Da Costa says Kangeman’s limited playtime was due to injury.
The Bobcats will look to bounce back against the Manhattan Jaspers on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
