On Monday evening, the Quinnipiac Bobcats took on the Yale Bulldogs and continued their hot start by running away with a score of 76-50.
This was a bounce-back performance for the Bobcats following their first loss of the season eight days ago.
“Well, you know, it hurt. It stung so much that game because we came all the way back. Then you had it won, then we couldn’t close it out,” said head coach Tricia Fabbri, “So that’s why you play those games. That’s why we’re playing the schedule.”
The Bulldogs scored the first four points of the night, then it was all Bobcats from there. After trailing early, the Bobcats rattled off 13 straight points led by back-to-back three-pointers from Caranda Perea.
After forcing five turnovers in the first quarter, the Bobcats took a 21-12 lead into the second quarter.
The defense carried over as Quinnipiac kept Yale off the scoreboard for the first seven minutes of the quarter, allowing the lead to balloon to 24.
“I think it’s just communication. In the first quarter, we didn’t communicate a lot of transition defense, so our matchups were different, and we just weren’t ready,” said Perea, “I think we played straight man that quarter. That’s also why. So we were just more honed in on our matchups.”
The Bobcats would take a 42-21 lead into the break, with Perea leading the charge with eight points in the second quarter, and Avery Lee pacing the Bulldogs with seven.
The third quarter was much more evenly played as both teams shot the ball at a high clip, with the Bulldogs shooting 46.7% and the Bobcats shooting at 45%.
However not much changed on the scoreboard as Quinnipiac still had a commanding 61-37 heading into the final quarter.
With a huge lead, the Bobcats started to empty their bench in the fourth allowing for the collegiate debuts for first-years Emma Lizotte and Gracie Copalan.
Ella O’Donnell led all scorers with 16 points, as Cinaya Moore led the Bulldogs with nine.
“I think it all started in practice when, like, our competing has been really good amongst all the posts, and we were getting each other really prepared,” claimed O’Donnell, “So when we got into the game again, it kept going on from there.”
With the win, the team improved to 7-1.
The Bobcats will take on Vermont next in their last non-conference matchup of the season as they gear up for MAAC play, the team will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. in Burlington, Vermont.
