The No. 10 Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team and the Brown Bears fought in an ECAC contest that saw both goalies record a shutout, including standout goaltender Kaley Doyle, recording her sixth of the season. It also happened to come against her former team in Brown.
“It’s fun playing against a lot of my old teammates,” said Doyle following the win, “It showed a lot of resilience in our team.”
This is the second time the Bobcats and Bears faced off this season, with Brown coming out on top in a 2-1 overtime win back in late October.
It was a scoreless first period of play with each team playing physically on defense, highlighted by Brown’s 11 blocked shots. Quinnipiac outshot Brown 7-2 and faceoffs were even. Neither team capitalized on their lone powerplay chances.
After no shots during an early power play opportunity for Brown, Quinnipiac came out swinging to begin the second period. The Bobcats registered seven shots on goal in the first seven minutes, matching their first-period total. However, sophomore netminder Rory Edwards stood her ground and denied any offensive opportunities.
“Rory Edwards played amazing today,” said Doyle, “I think it’s cool to merge with her and stare at her at the other end of the ice, I’m happy for her.”
Brown started putting more shots on goal towards the end of the period, but Doyle stopped all shots that came her way. The game remained scoreless after 40 minutes of play.
The defensive battle continued throughout the third period as both offenses were stifled. Brown nearly broke the scoreless tie midway through the period; however, the goal was overturned. The Bobcats started gaining more offensive momentum as the final period of regulation moved along.
Even with multiple efforts from both squads, 60 minutes of hockey wasn’t enough to determine the outcome. For the second consecutive game between these two teams; it was headed to overtime.
After a turnover in the Bobcat’s zone, senior defenseman Cameron Sikich was all alone on a breakaway but Haley Doyle made a miraculous save to keep the game at 0-0.
“She’s a competitor,” said Quinnipiac head coach Cassandra Turner, “She wants to win and she competes every single day in practice, and I think that’s why it’s easy for her in the games to be consistent with that.”
Following five minutes of the same trend of no goals, the two teams embarked on a 12-round shootout, which resulted in an Emerson Jarvis goal in round 11 to give the Bobcats a 6-5 win.
Doyle and the Bobcats are looking to carry this momentum after sweeping the weekend as they prepare for two more ECAC opponents coming into M&T Bank Arena, starting with Harvard on Friday and followed by Dartmouth on Saturday.
“I think we’re doing all the right things,” said Doyle, “We’re taking the right steps, and I think next weekend is going to be a big one for us.”
