The Quinnipiac men’s basketball team returned home to M&T Bank Arena on Saturday, defeating the Rider Broncs 75-64.
Coming into this matchup on a four-game win streak, head coach Tom Pecora’s message to his team was clear as they played their first MAAC home game.
“It doesn’t matter that we beat them once,” said Amari Monroe, quoting Coach Pecora.
The Bobcats’ Savion Lewis returned to action for the first time since January 10th, providing a spark to the team.
In the first half, Rider looked to take an early lead in the game, shooting four-for-four from three-point range. They pushed their lead to as large as 11 points and finished the half with 42 points to Quinnipiac’s 39.
Forward Paul Otieno picked up two early fouls, which sent him to the bench early, while Rider capitalized with 24 points in the paint. Tariq Ingraham posed problems for Quinnipiac in the first half but was held to just four points in the second half as the Bobcats adjusted their defense.
Ryan Mabrey led the charge for Quinnipiac in the first half, scoring all 12 of his points from behind the arc, shooting four-for-six.
“I’ve had ups and downs, obviously. I’ve lost a little confidence here and there, but this definitely helps,” Mabrey said, “I just want to carry this onto the next game. It’s not about me; it’s about us, and I’m happy we came out with a W today.”
Mabrey praised Lewis’s return, saying, “It’s a lot easier. He’s definitely a facilitator; he looks for people.” Lewis finished his first game back with seven assists and six points.
The second half was a different story for the Bobcats. The game was tied five times in the first nine minutes of the half until Quinnipiac went on a 14-2 run to take control. The Bobcats’ bench contributed significantly, scoring 23 points, while the team added 19 points off fast breaks.
Monroe led the way with 19 points and 12 assists, recording his third double-double of the season. Alexis Reyes received high praise from his coach and teammates despite a quieter stat line. “Lex does all the little things that nobody sees. He doesn’t get enough credit. I tell him all the time how much I appreciate him as a player, person, whatever,” Monroe said.
The Bobcats will look to continue their winning streak as they host rival Fairfield on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
