After two days of tennis at the Quinnipiac University Invitational, a pair of Bobcats walked away champions and two more continue to the final day of action.
Mary Chupa and Ariana Launie dominated the University of Connecticut duo, Lucy Nutting and Emilie Burgess, winning 8-0. The Flight “B” Champions advanced to 5-0 on the season with the victory.
While Chupa and Launie put away UConn handedly, Rachel Cantor and Erin Suvar advanced to the singles semifinals of Flights “A” and “D.” Cantor defeated Seton Hall’s Rocio Portela-Berrios in a tight 6-4, 6-3 match. She went on to defeat UConn’s Jennifer Learmonth in much cleaner fashion, taking the match 6-3, 6-0.
Suvar downed UConn’s Sarah Griffin and Alli Carnall in similar fashion, winning the first round 6-3, 6-1 and the second 6-1, 6-3. Both Suvar and Cantor continue to the semifinals in tomorrow’s action slated to start at 9 a.m.
Several other Bobcats surged in the first round of play but were unable to advance to Sunday’s coveted matches. Sarah Viebrok sailed past her Hartford opponent, Colleen Beck in the first round, but struggled against Marisela Aviles of Providence in Flight “A.” Chupa and Michelle Dassa also couldn’t see their way past the second round of action in Flight “B” play.
Sunday morning brings the final serves of the Quinnipiac Invitational, and while only four Bobcats will hit the courts in search of a championship, it is guaranteed the rest of the pack will be anxiously lining the fence.
