Usually, generating 30 shots leads to a win in college soccer. However, that was not the case in Saturday’s Quinnipiac-Rider MAAC women’s soccer match, which saw the Bobcats (5-4, 1-1 MAAC) fire 30 shots, but lose 2-0 to the Broncs (4-2-3, 1-0-1 MAAC).

After hitting the post less than one minute into the game, the Bobcats dominated the field the entire first half. Quinnipiac senior forward Kelsey Goldring rang two shots off the post herself. The Bobcats kept up the pressure the entire first half, getting off thirteen shots.

Along with a stellar offensive presence, the Bobcats’ defense and goaltending seemed to shut down the Broncs’ offense, holding them to only three shots in the first half, which freshman goalkeeper Meaghan Phillips all stopped. Everything seemed to be bouncing in Quinnipiac’s direction.

The second half was a different story.

Rider came out firing in the second half with a strong offensive push that was absent in the first half. Phillips was tested early with a couple shots right out of the break that she saved to keep the game knotted at zero.

The Bobcats got a chance to get on the scoreboard off a penalty kick. Although the ball ended up crossing the goal line, the referee called the play offside, which proved to be a vital turning point in the contest.

Despite the lack of shots Rider’s offense posted and the phenomenal defense that Quinnipiac was playing, Broncs midfielder Ailis Martin struck eighty-three minutes into the game with a shot that clanked in off the post to take the game’s first lead.

“They hit the post, it goes in. We hit the post, we miss.” head coach Dave Clarke said. “That’s MAAC play.”

A little over one minute later, the Broncs struck again. This time, midfielder Sofia Soares beat Phillips courtesy of an impressive pass from Valeria Pascuet at the near sideline.

The Broncs held the lead for the remainder of the game, bringing goaltender Carmen Carbonell her second shutout of the season.

The loss bumps the Bobcats to 1-1 in the MAAC, and gave the Broncs their first conference win of the year, at 1-0-1. The Bobcats will look to avenge the tough loss on Wednesday night in Poughkeepsie, New York, at Marist.

“It’s a new game,” Clarke said. “We have to see if we can bounce back.”
