The Hartford Wolf Pack, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s New York Rangers, announced Wednesday that they have inked former Quinnipiac men’s hockey forward Alex Whelan to a contract.

Whelan finished his Bobcats career with 48 goals, tied for 24th in program history, and 30 assists. He was elevated to Assistant Captain for Rand Pecknold’s squad in 2019-20.

The Ramsey, New Jersey, native becomes the fifth Quinnipiac alumnus currently on an active roster in the AHL, though the league’s season is currently suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the Bobcats’ own season was prematurely ended, Whelan recorded 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists), one off his career-high set in his junior season. His senior year was highlighted by a career-long six-game points streak and his second career hat trick, on January 17 at Holy Cross.

The Wolf Pack play in Hartford’s XL Center, also home to the University of Connecticut Huskies. Whelan scored in his only career appearance there, on January 2, 2018.
