Coming into Saturday, the Fairfield Stags women’s basketball team was 5-0 on the road, but that changed this weekend. The Bobcats showed they are the real deal in the MAAC by beating the Stags twice with a 60-44 win today and a 67-55 win yesterday.

Fairfield is known as an amazing three-point shooting team, but that was not the case today. The Stags only shot 18 percent from three, which can be credited to Quinnipiac’s defense. The team also played great defense on star Stags guard Lou Lopez-Senechal, who was held to 17 points and shot only 31 percent.

Rose Caverly made it back-to-back effective shooting performances with a team-high 17 points and four three-pointers. Mackenzie DeWees continued her dominant defensive run with five steals to go along with her seven points and seven rebounds.

Quinnipiac started off hot, leading 14-6 after the first quarter and never looked back. The second quarter started off with a scare for the Bobcats with the lead getting cut down to only two points. However, that was the closest the Stags got for the rest of the game.

The Bobcats went on a 15-3 run to end the second quarter. While the team got offensive contributions across the board, the Quinnipiac defense held the best offense in the MAAC to just one three-pointer.

The second half was all Bobcats again, but the real headline was the return of Cat Almeida. Almeida, a 6’5” sophomore forward, made her return after a battle with thyroid cancer. Even though she did not score, she had a huge block and made her presence felt.

The Bobcats’ next game will be Wednesday against the Siena Saints.
