Quinnipiac and Marist opened up their respective 2021 campaigns in Hamden Tuesday afternoon, as the Bobcats came back from an early 1-0 deficit to win 3-1.

The big story of the game was freshman Rebecca Cooke from Dublin, Ireland. She notched two assists and had two shots on goal in her collegiate debut.

Although Quinnipiac was not able to find the back of the net in the first half, it was able to bounce back and continue applying pressure to Marist goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner. That pressure paid off in the second half as the Bobcats scored all three of their goals in half.

In the first half, Quinnipiac dominated the offensive zone, peppering Kelchner with 20 shots, putting seven on net.

Along with the shots on goal, the Bobcats had seven corner kicks compared to the Red Foxes’ two.

Marist had a slow start to the first half with only one shot on goal. Unfortunately for Quinnipiac, that shot on goal found the back of the net courtesy of Amanda Caldarelli in the 36th minute, giving Marist a 1-0 lead.

Marist took the lead into the second half but this time, Quinnipiac took advantage of their opportunities.

In the 49th minute, Rebecca Cooke found Courtney Chochol open for an easy goal, tying the game at one.

28 minutes later, Quinnipiac took its first lead of the game and once again, Cooke was involved in the goal. She passed it to Hannah Reiter who slotted it home to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.

In the 79th minute, the Bobcats took full control of the game when Olivia Scott kicked a laser over the head of Kelchner to make it a 3-1 game.

Quinnipiac will look to build some momentum from its opening day win as the Bobcats head to New Jersey to face Rider next Tuesday.
