Game One:

Quinnipiac continued its tough start to the season Friday, losing both ends of a doubleheader to Monmouth.

The Bobcats fell to the Hawks 16-3 in the first of their two games.

The two teams were deadlocked at zero through two innings before Monmouth got things going in the third.

After senior Erika Coreth sent Katie Harrington home, junior Danielle Dominik hit a three-run bomb to left field giving the Hawks a 4-0 lead.

The Bobcats answered in the bottom half of the inning with sophomore Katherine Rodriguez’s three-run double to centerfield.

Rodriguez is having a big year for the Bobcats thus far, hitting over .500 at the plate.

“We knew that getting Kat was a big-time deal, she’s a big-time player,” coach Hillary Smith said. “It was just a matter of time for her to be able to shine so I’m glad she’s stepping up and being the player we knew she would be when she came here.”

With a 4-3 lead, Monmouth didn’t look back. The Hawks put up four more runs in the fourth.

With a 12-3 lead in the sixth, senior Katie Harrington, who was all over the scoreboard today, hit an inside-the-park grand slam, putting a dagger in this one.

Game Two:

After a strong start to the season, Quinnipiac (1-5, MAAC 1-5) has found themselves in trouble after enduring its fifth loss in a row.

This afternoon, the Bobcats were unable to find their rhythm once again when they faced off against Monmouth (5-1, MAAC 5-1).

Following the 16-3 blowout in game one of the doubleheader, the Bobcats were determined to get their minds locked in and correct their mistakes for game two.

“We go back to our core values,” coach Hillary Smith said. “Also, we try to make everything small, just focus on little things, if we can do that then the big picture always happens.”

Quinnipiac immediately had to deal with adversity after Monmouth’s Lindsey Baron hit a line drive up the middle. The base hit would bring baserunner Katie Harrington home to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.

Luckily, the Bobcats would quickly recover. Sophomores Sydney Tedim and Kat Rodriguez each played their part in moving the runners around the bases.

With runners in scoring position, Kayla Thomas took advantage and hit a sacrifice grounder to the second basemen to send Kayla Jensen home. The Bobcats had tied the game up at one.

However, in the third inning, the Hawks fought back with their dominant performance on offense.

Lindsey Baron made contact for the second time in the game and drove Harrington home again.

Designated hitter Danielle Dominik made an impact to the scoreboard by hitting a ground ball up the left side of second base to bring in Kiley O’Rourke.

Monmouth had retaken control of the game.

From there on out, Quinnipiac could not find any answers on offense. It repeatedly went down in order and Monmouth would only increase its lead.

During the top of the fifth, Monmouth took full advantage of pitcher Julia Woeste’s stamina. The Hawks quickly loaded the bases and allowed Kylie Gletow to pick up her first RBI of the season.

Freshman Julia Thuer also sent two baserunners home with her single to right field.

Ultimately, Monmouth ran away with the game, as the score would stand with the Bobcats falling to the Hawks 6-1.

“We wish it could have gone better and we had a little bit more energy,” Smith said. “But we are going to come out as a new team tomorrow.”

Quinnipiac resumes its series against Monmouth with another doubleheader Saturday, starting at noon.
