The Quinnipiac men’s soccer team was able to win against the St. Peter’s Peacocks 4-0 for the Bobcat Game Day on Saturday afternoon. Going into this game the Bobcats were coming off of two ties, one against the Iona Gaels on Saturday, October 15, and the other against the Manhattan Jaspers on October 19. The last win was against Rider on October 12. This was the first time in two years that Quinnipiac was able to beat the Peacocks.

The Bobcats were able to score their first three goals of the game before the 35-minute mark. The first goal of the game was scored by sophomore, Sander Sonsterud at 8:40 into the game. Sonsterud headed the ball off a cross from Jared Smith. The next goal which came 11 minutes later was by senior captain David Bercedo. The first-year, Ramesh Delsouz, scored the third goal. Delsouz placed the ball to the side of the net after the St. Peters goalie fumbled the first save. Later in the second half at the 84-minute mark, sophomore Drew Seguro scored the fourth and final goal. This was his first career collegiate goal.

David Bercedo scored his tenth goal of the season. This is his 10th goal in 14 games. He is currently leading the MAAC conferences with the most goals scored.

“Right now, I’m very happy and I’m not going to lie to you. 10 goals in like 14 games, so that’s pretty good,” Bercedo said. “But at least for me it’s not the most important, the most important is winning games because it’s most important for the team.”

Kar Netzel also had his fourth shutout of the season, allowing no goals to be scored. Netzel was able to save all 6 shots on net. Even though the offense scored all the goals, the solid defense and goalkeeping are what prevented the Peacocks from scoring.

Coach Eric Da Costa said he was very happy with his offense but the “defenders start the plays for us.” Da Costa said he was “proud of the backline for keeping a clean sheet and proud of Carl for making two really big saves to preserve the shutout which was the ultimate goal.”

Even though it was a shutout for the Bobcats, the first half was a much better performance than the second. In the first half, they had most of the position of the ball and were constantly putting pressure on the Peacock’s defense. Then the second half came and St. Peters had more positions and was trying to get a comeback into the game.

“Certainly, in the first half we checked all the boxes, in the second half we weren’t as good as we are capable of being,” Da costa said. “We still managed to find that fourth goal and keep a clean sheet.”

Quinnipiac will play again on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Mount St. Mary’s. This is the first time they will play each other because the Mountaineers are new to the MAAC conference.

“We will be as prepared as we can be and I’m sure our guys will be ready to have a good performance and leave Emmetsburg with 3 more points,” said Da Costa. Mount St. Mary’s is 3-3-1in conference play while Quinnipiac is 4-1-2.
