The Quinnipiac Bobcats faced off against the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Saturday afternoon. In what looked like an old-school matchup with mud flying all over the field and onto the jerseys of the players, Quinnipiac got back to .500 on the season.
Quinnipiac fought hard getting their white jerseys to look brown. Senior fullback Kat Storey led the way for the Bobcats. Storey’s elite speed allowed her to get into the try zone twice and lead the team to a win.
Quinnipiac head coach Beck Carlson talked about how influential she is to the team. “She doesn’t stop… she has a great mindset, and she sure does deliver.” She would end up leading the Bobcats to a 22-17 victory. Here is how it happened.
The Bobcats struggled on defense in the two losses that they had on the season allowing 55 and 47 points in those games. Today was a different story. Starting in the first half Quinnipiac was the first team to strike. Seven minutes into the game Storey found the try zone after sprinting down the sideline.
This game was one of the more about the defensive style. There was no more scoring until there were 21 minutes to play in the game. Sacred Heart was looking to bounce back after they had a hot start to the season coming into the game with a three-game win streak. Sacred Heart’s Reece Woods would find the try zone, but the conversion would be no good. Sacred Heart would not get a conversion the whole game.
Quinnipiac fought hard this whole game, really putting the mud on their jerseys. Breauna Wertman found the try zone for Quinnipiac to make this a five-point lead after the conversion was no good.
The defense would hold up until the clock hit zero. The Pioneers were still on their drive and they realized that the Bobcats were tired. Sacred Heart continued their strong drive and would find the try zone to go into halftime strong. Fabiola Millien-Faustin tied it for them to make it tied at ten.
In the second half, Quinnipiac came out strong. It took them time to get rolling but when the clock reached 30 minutes Quinnipiac looked to add to the lead.
After Cassidy Dugdale made it a five-point lead, it was time for Storey to get back in the game. Storey used her great speed once again to find the try zone and make this a runaway second half. Fódhla Ní Bhraonáin also converted the one and only conversion of the game to make it a 12-point lead.
With under five minutes to play Sacred Heart would score one more try. However, the Pioneers looked like they had a chance to make it interesting. SHU would get the ball back as the clock hit zero and were driving down the field. It came to a one-on-one with the defender. Sacred Heart would be stopped which would end the game and give the Bobcats their second win on the season.
