The No. 5 Quinnipiac Bobcats defeated the Brown Bears with a final score of 4-3 in overtime to pick up their first conference win of the season.
Through the first period of play, Quinnipiac dominated Brown, outshooting them 23-11. But it wasn’t until less than eight minutes were remaining in the first when first-year forward Matthew Lansing would open up the scoring for the Bobcats off a cross-ice pass from Antonin Verreault.
Heading into the second period, Quinnipiac continued to dominate on the ice with multiple opportunities on net until Bobcats senior defenseman Will Gilson received a two-minute penalty for interference.
While the Bobcats spent the first minute of the penalty kill with three strong short-handed goal attempts, former Bobcat Michael Salandra would take a triangle pass from Ethan Mistry and slot it just behind Quinnipiac’s goaltender Matej Marinov to tie the score at one. This goal would mark Salandra’s first collegiate goal of his career after spending no time on the ice for Quinnipiac during the 2024-2025 season.
Just two minutes later, sophomore Chris Pelosi would put the Bobcats up in the lead again, with the assists going to Aaron Schwartz and Andon Cerbone.
Junior right wing Mason Marcellus would then later extend the Bobcats’ lead to 3-1 after taking it up the right side of the ice off a pass from Jeremy Wilmer and Chris Pelosi.
The third and final period of action saw an entire flip of the script. Brown’s Charlie Gollob would go on to pick up his first goal of the season off a pass from Ivan Zadvernyuk just four minutes into the third.
Just over a minute later, Brown’s Ethan Mistry would pick up his second assist of the night after sending one flying down the ice to the stick of Zackary Tonelli who sent it to the top shelf of the net right behind Marinov’s right shoulder to tie this game at three.
The score would sit there until the regulation ran out, and send this game into overtime.
While the third period collapse seemed to be a common theme for the Bobcats this week, following their 2-2 tie with Alaska on Tuesday, Nov. 4, that ended in a shootout loss or their 4-2 loss to the Yale Bulldogs on Friday, Nov. 7, they came into this overtime period with a newfound sense of confidence. This confidence was only amplified further when Brown received a bench minor for too many men on the ice, giving the Bobcats an extra man on for the final minute of overtime.
After a quick altercation between Brown’s goaltender, Tyler Shea and Quinnipiac’s Jeremy Wilmer, with 37 seconds remaining in overtime, first-year Ethan Wyttenbach would find the stick of the senior forward who would slot it past Shea and give the Bobcats the overtime win and two points to add to their win column.
Quinnipiac’s Chris Pelosi and Jeremy Wilmer both would notch multi-point nights, with both racking up one goal and one assist.
The Quinnipiac Bobcats will be back in action at M&T Bank Arena for Hockey Fights Cancer night on Nov. 15 to battle the No.12/13 Boston University Terriers.
